Ideas and facts against “bad development”

Who we are

The Association was established in 1969 by Adolfo Soldini, who decided to open in Milan the italian branch of Frères des Hommes (currently present in Belgium, France, Italy and Luxembourg).

After the first years devoted to providing assitance to women and men experiencing serious social disadvantage, we shifetd towards activities aimed at fostering participated and sustainable development by supporting projects and programmes drafted by different local partners (associations, movements, groups) in Africa and Latin America.

What we deal with in Africa

The rural question, in order to:

– grant access to water

– protect and preserve the environment

– spread the use of renewable energy technologies

– valorise local seeds and products through support to farmers’ associations deeply rooted in the territory

The urban question, in order to:

– protect and promote children’s rights

– boost the economic growth of women’s cooperatives and organisations

– resolve environmental issues, with particular reference to waste management

– strenghten micro-entrepreneurial activities, also through microcredit

What we deal with in Latin America

The rural question, in order to:

– grant access to soil and natural resources

– proctect the environment

– improve working, production and marketing conditions of agricultural products by strenghtening farmers’ associations and movements

Local economic development promoted by small producers’ organisations who interact with local authorities in order to define, through a democratic and participatory approach, development policies that would be beneficial to all the communities involved

Development education

We educate students and citizens in italian schools and institutions and on the territory, so as to make them:

– aware of the interdependence between the North and South of the world

– open to exchanges and dialogue with other cultures

– respectful of the environment

– aware of the risks resulting from current consumer trends

In particular, Fratelli dell'Uomo targets students and teachers in schools offering educational schemes and workshops on interculture, human rights and global citizenship, peace and sustainable development.

Cooperation with the territory

In Italy we work through campaigns, exhibitions and other cultural events towards:

– the sensibilisation of citizens on the issue of international cooperation

– the involvement of municipalities in adopting the instruments of “decentralised cooperation” by promoting exchanges and the creation of networks with like-minded associations and institutions in the South of the world

Networks and recognition

Fratelli dell'Uomo belongs to the european network Frères des Hommes, is a member of CIPSI (NGOs coordination) and of Banca Popolare Etica and it is recognised by Istituto Italiano della Donazione.

It is recognised by the European Commission and by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is accredited as an educational agency by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, it is recognised by Regione Lombardia, Veneto and Toscana.
