The “Social Day: new citizens from local to global” is an active citizenship and participation project co-financed by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), aimed at children and young people aged 6 -19 years in order to promote the spread of a culture of solidarity and volunteering.
The project is active in Lombardy, Tuscany, Trentino and Veneto and has two objectives, one of a social nature and one of a solidarity nature. The young people of all the territories involved, adequately accompanied, will be able to experience in the field their being active citizens, making themselves real protagonists within their own community with the aim of helping realities far from their own.
The Social Day 2018 will take place on 13 and 14 April.
The meaning of Social Day
The activities proposed in the classroom in this training have a character of non-formal education to promote in the pupils the development of the concepts of active citizenship and solidarity through direct experience, in a concrete and autonomous way.
The topics covered will allow to develop a greater awareness of the rights of children and adolescents through the effective assessment of basic needs and to reflect on the inequalities between countries in the world supporting the growth of the sense of justice and responsibility.
Moreover, through this path, individual children will be able to experience how, with the activities proposed by them at the local level, they can really contribute to an effective change in the global dynamics of international cooperation and humanitarian aid, thus creating a collective sense of common work with the aim of reducing inequalities and discrimination.
The concrete actions that give life to the day of Social Day are the most varied and can be carried out at school or in the many realities of the territory: together with the students will agree on the types of activities and schedules, will define the subjects to be involved in fundraising and will decide what contribution to donate in solidarity.
The activities for the benefit of the community will be identified with the support of municipal administrations, schools themselves, the network of associations and organizations of the third sector, traders and small businesses, or with the support of parents, relatives, neighbors and friends.
The activities carried out on the day of the Social Day will have many positive effects on the territories in which they will be implemented: both at the time of their implementation, because young people will help to protect and enhance their city as a common good, and in the long term, because the experience of volunteering will generate new relationships and positive synergies. The whole citizenship will have the opportunity to interact with young people by creating a bridge between young people and the territory.
A training course for teachers will also be organised before the start of the workshops with the young people, in order to provide operational tools to integrate the theme of global citizenship into the educational programmes.
